Carter Smith Hired as Climbing Coach

BANNER ELK, N.C. - Andrew Carter Smith has been named the new Head Climbing Coach at Lees-McRae College, Vice President for Athletics and Club Sports Craig McPhail announced Monday, October 1, 2018.

"It's exciting to have someone with Carter's background leading our climbing team as much as it is to have identified a club sport program that fits so well with our mission," said McPhail. "Our young people who have an interest in Lees-McRae College and climbing now have a leader who can help them achieve their goals in a unique setting."

Smith joins LMC after most recently serving as a climbing guide at Mountain Alliance in Boone, N.C., and also still serves as a climbing guide at the North Carolina Outward Bound School.

He also recently served as a lead guide for climbing, caving, rope courses and towers at Rock Dimensions in Boone, N.C.

While a student at Appalachian State University, he had served as a route setter as well as on the outdoor programs staff for ASU University Recreation.

In addition, he was a youth programmer at Center-45 Climbing and Fitness in Boone, N.C. for three years.

From 2010-2012, he served as a counselor, instructor, assistant area director and an area director at Camp Raven Knob Scout Reservation in Mt. Airy, N.C.

"I am so excited to be starting this new adventure with Lees-McRae!" said Smith. "I am inspired by the level of motivation, talent, and leadership possessed by the student-athlete community here. My aim is to help these students to develop the skills needed to achieve their climbing goals. I hope by building a strong climbing community here, we will not only do well in competition, but also create a stable network of support for these students to help them develop as young adults and to fulfill the mission of the school."

Smith is a 2018 graduate of Appalachian State, holding a bachelor of science in recreation management with a concentration in outdoor experiential education as well as a bachelor of arts in languages, literature and culture with a concentration in Spanish. He graduated Summa Cum Laude and also with University Honors. Smith will also teach rock climbing and advanced rock climbing with the Outdoor Recreation Management academic program.
