Dr. Ed Shelton makes generous donation to Bobcat athletics

BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae College athletic department is pleased to announce its receipt of a second gift of $50,000 in two years, this one from Dr. Edwin Shelton, co-founder of the largest family-owned estate winery in North Carolina.

Dr. Shelton is an alumnus of Lees-McRae, class of 1960, and honorary alumnus of the class of 1995. He was a recipient of an honorary doctorate from LMC during the commencement ceremonies on May 7.

In 2009, Dr. Shelton and his wife, Dotti, were honored with the Founder's Medal of Lees-McRae College. Dr. Shelton has made a name for himself in all avenues of business throughout his career, co-founding numerous companies with his brother, Charlie, including Shelton Vineyards in 1999. He is also a current member of the college's Board of Trustees.

"This further proves what we are doing at Lees-McRae College and in the athletic department does make a difference, especially when good friends want to invest in us like Dr. Ed Shelton," said Director of Athletics Craig McPhail.

The Athletic Department will challenge others to match this as there are certain projects of interests, such as re-surfacing the Arthur, Lauritsen and Sanders Track and Field Venue, new bleachers in Williams Gymnasium, and a turf field.

"This is our second $50,000 gift in two years and I am happy for everyone associated with the college," said McPhail. "Our hard work and dedication to make the journey of life through intercollegiate athletics a smooth one is indeed happening."

In 2009, the athletic department received $50,000 from Diamond Creek Golf Course, owned by Mr. Wayne Huizenga, former owner of the Miami Dolphins, Waste Management and Blockbuster.

This gift allowed the department to create a press box for tennis, track and field, lacrosse and soccer, renovated the outdoor tennis courts, signage decals on doors and windows, re-surfaced Williams gymnasium basketball and volleyball floor, banners in Williams Gym documenting athletic success over the years, as well as many other minor projects enhancing the athletic complex.

"Our continued efforts to provide better facilities, photos, stories, videos, and blogs to enrich the lives of our student-athletes will ultimately create better teams. Having the capability to take an inside look at our athletic department will make Lees-McRae College a solid investment for many more partnerships and relationships," said McPhail.
