Bobcats set to host alumni on Homecoming Weekend
BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Lees-McRae College will welcome its alumni back to campus once again this weekend, as the College and the athletic department host Homecoming Weekend.
"We are very excited to welcome back so many alumni, friends and family," said Director of Athletics Craig McPhail. 'This is a great time for all to see the beauty of Lees-McRae College as well as seeing our competitive young men and women represent the Green and Gold."
The weekend kicks off on Friday with the Hall of Fame Dinner, as the athletic department inducts Leonard Wheeler (1989, Football), Allison McDonald Norris (1993, Women's Soccer), and Carla Swart (2011, Cycling) into the Fred I. Dickerson Athletic Hall of Fame at 6 p.m. in the MacDonald Dining Hall. Immediately following the dinner, the athletic department will host the Bobcat Bonfire, a long-held tradition at which LMC's athletic teams are recognized and celebrated.
Fans, parents, and alumni have several athletic events to choose from on Saturday, as the Lees-McRae cross country team opens the day with the LMC Green-Gold Fun Run on the LMC Carla Trails. The Bobcats have performed tremendously so far this season, as the men and women finished second and third, respectively, at the Greensboro Invitational this past Saturday.
The men's and women's lacrosse programs will host their annual alumni games on the lacrosse and soccer practice fields, respectively. The men's game is slated to begin at 10 a.m., while the women's game is scheduled for 11 a.m. The afternoon kicks off at 12 p.m. with the Bobcat Tailgate on Bobcat Bank, as well as the men's and women's soccer reunion at Tate Field.
The Bobcat women's soccer team takes the pitch for a 1 p.m. Conference Carolinas matchup with Barton College. Lees-McRae is in the midst of a tremendous run of form, having outscored its opponents by a margin of 23-0 over the last five matches, including a four-contest stretch in conference play.
The Bobcat softball team will also host their annual alumni game at 1:30 p.m. at the softball field. Lees-McRae enjoyed one of the best seasons in program history this past spring, posting the school's first winning record in league play and advancing to the championship game of the conference tournament.
The women's volleyball team is also in action on Saturday, hosting Belmont Abbey College in a conference match at 2 p.m. The Bobcats have opened the conference schedule with six straight wins, running their league winning streak to 37 matches, which dates back to the 2009 season.
The LMC men's soccer team caps the afternoon with a 3 p.m. conference tilt against Barton, squaring off with the Bulldogs in a pivotal league match. The Bobcats have performed well under the leadership of first-year head coach Lee Squires, tallying several hard-fought wins over challenging opponents, including a 2-1 decision against then-No. 22 Flagler College on Sep. 3.
"There are so many engaging opportunities for people to take part in," said McPhail. "We are looking forward to hosting everyone."
