BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Wednesday evening was a special night for all in attendance in Williams Gymnasium, as the Lees-McRae College athletic department honored senior cyclist Kerry Werner (Birdsboro, Pa.) for his national championship performance at the USA Cycling Cyclo-cross Collegiate National Championships on January 13 in Madison, Wis.
Werner was joined between the Bobcats’ men’s and women’s basketball contests against King College by Lees-McRae President Barry M. Buxton, Director of Athletics Craig McPhail, and Director of Cycling Doug Owen for a special ceremony to honor his accomplishments. During the ceremony, Werner was presented with his national championship jersey, as well as his championship medal.
Werner successfully defended his national championship effort from a year ago at cyclo-cross nationals on January 13, crossing the line ahead of the field to lead the Bobcats to a strong third-place performance.
The senior’s break-neck pace put him into the lead early on, as Werner jumped to the head of the back on the second lap and did not falter, leading through the finish line to repeat as the division I collegiate national champion.
Werner’s effort proved to be the rule rather than the exception for the Bobcats on Sunday, with four riders finishing in the top 16 to cement a strong third-place performance for Lees-McRae in the team omnium.
