Bobcat Cycling Team Dominates Home Mountain Bike Race

Banner Elk, NC--In a Conference Mountain Bike Race hosted by Lees-McRae in preparation for the National Championships to be held on campus in four weeks, the Lees-McRae cyclists once again dominated the field. Men's A racers grabbed first place in every event while the rest of the squad managed to add five first place finishes for a total of nine for the weekend. The Bobcats also garnered an unprecedented additional 26 top five spots from the race events.

On a crisp morning in the mountains the Men's A cyclists kicked off the competition on a freshly prepared short track course. The Bobcats' Scott Stewart pedaled to a first place finish with seven teammates managing to gain seven of the next eight positions. In Women's A the riders finished with five racers in the top twenty. In the Men's B short track it was complete domination with the Bobcats sweeping the top seven places led by Gonzalo Escobar. Men's C saw Matthew Owen place fifth.

Saturday afternoon the downhill competition began with Lees-McRae's Aaron Bradford claiming first place in Men's A while Ben Hulse finished second. Jacob Vigneault placed sixth in Men's B, while Ben Corbalis and Vincent Massey rode to first and second place respectively. Olivia Maurey was the top Bobcat finisher placing third in the women's race.

Competition continued in the late afternoon as the riders headed over to the revamped but challenging dual slalom course for qualifications and races that went on into the evening. Aaron Bradford claimed his second first place finish of the day in Men's A. Jacob Vigneault finished fourth in Men's B while Vincent Massey claimed the same spot for the Bobcats in Men's C. The Lady Bobcats trampled the competition in the dual slalom, capturing four of the five top spots with Kristine Koch, Carla Swart and Olivia Maurey finishing one, two, three.

The Cross Country Races began and finished at Lees-McRae's Mill Pond on Sunday morning. The Bobcats showed their mastery of the course by claiming five of the six top spots in Men's A with Scott Stewart, Mike Anderson, Randy La Prairie, and Eric Thompson grabbing first thru fourth positions and Chris Consorto finishing sixth. Not to be outdone, the Men's B cyclists (Gonzalo Escobar, Ben Corbalis and Nick Dale) swept first thru third respectively. Michael Rozelle was leading Men's C when mechanical problems caused him to drop out. The women were lead by Kristi Henne (2nd) and Ally Stacher (4th).

In the end the team captured nine first place, nine second place, six third place, five fourth place and six fifth place finishes in the field of eleven teams.

The Bobcats travel this weekend to Nashville, TN to compete in the Vanderbilt Mountain Bike Races as they continue to prepare for the conference finals October 13-14 at Clemson University.

October 26-28, 2007 Lees-McRae will be hosting the College Mountain Bike National Championships. This will be the first time the national event has been physically held on a college campus, and the college is excited about receiving both the honor and responsibility for managing the Championships.
