BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Veronica Laughton has signed with the Lees-McRae cycling program, announced director and head coach of cycling Tim Hall Friday morning.
"We look forward to having someone with Veronica's ability on our team. She's got extraordinary bike handling skills from her experience in BMX, and quickly achieved success in mountain biking the past two seasons," praised Hall. "The experience Veronica gained racing the NICA SoCal league has prepared her well for competition in the SECCC. I believe she will come in and make an immediate impact, on and off the bike."
The incoming freshmen excelled as a senior at Lancaster High School after finishing fourth overall for the 2016 NICA SoCal High School MTB League in Varsity. She claimed four top-five finishes in the regular season.
Under the direction of Shilo Vigil, Laughton turned in multiple top-five placings from 2012-2015 in BMX events.
In 2012, the Lancaster, Calif., native finished second at the BMX Grand Nationals.
She transitioned from BMX to mountain bike racing during the 2015 season.
"Veronica is our sixth female signee for this coming fall, and puts our women roster at twelve total. Coach Mandy Gallagher has a solid group to work with and help take to the next level. These additions give us much greater depth than we've ever had," said Hall. "It will be fun to see how everyone develops, which I'm sure will provide a lot of excitement within our program."
Laughton is the daughter of Fred and Donna Laughton and sister to Richard (16). She intends on majoring in nursing.
"I chose Lees-McRae because of the nursing and cycling program. I hope to become a BSN and learn new skills on and off the bike as well," said Laughton.
