BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College cycling program announced the signing of Brendan Bengtson (Anthem Arizona) for the 2017-18 season. Bengtson is the tenth signee for the Bobcats and LMC Head Coach Tim Hall this spring.
"We are thrilled Brendan has chosen to join our program here at Lees-McRae," Hall said. "He is a well-rounded road rider with experience that will allow him to compete on our elite A team right away, not to mention he is a NICA graduate on the mountain bike side. This is a big step for Brendan to come all the way from the Phoenix area in Arizona, but he will thrive athletically and academically in our mountains here in Banner Elk. I believe he has tremendous potential, so we look forward to impacting his development the next four years."
Bengtson has raced at the Tour de L'Abitibi World Cup on a USA selection team. The Anthem, Arizona native finished third at the ASU Sun Devil Criterium, fifth at the McDowell Mountain Circuit, and eighth in Cat 2 at MTB Nationals. Additionally, he recently upgraded to a Category 2 on the road.
"I chose Lees-McRae College, because of their proximity to the outdoors, their reputation in the collegiate cycling world, and their business administration department," said Bengtson.
Bengtson is a proposed business administration major at Lees-McRae with a concentration in finance and a cycling studies minor.
