BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College cycling team is back in action this Saturday (Dec. 1) at the Southeastern Collegiate Cycling Conference (SECCC) cyclocross championships hosted by Warren Wilson College.
Destination Louisville - Head Coach Tim Hall says this is the last time for his riders to prove themselves before the cyclocross national championships in Louisville, Ky. later this month.
"This race is one final time for our riders to compete against high-level competition because of all the teams that are going to be there," said Hall.
Assistant Coach Brian Jorgensen noted that with such a short cyclocross season, riders have to be at their best in order to potentially make the cut for nationals.
"The kids really have to perform if they want to show that they're ready to go to nationals," said Jorgensen.
Jorgensen went on to talk about the personnel decisions that go into who makes the nationals roster based on the race this weekend.
"We don't have a very big A squad to go to nationals, but how they start and how they race at this event is going to give us an idea of who's going to be best to line up on the starting gate at nationals," said Jorgensen.
Jorgensen continued on about how cyclocross is a different type of event based on the race itself but also based on the importance of the start.
"You have to attack it and want to get out there to the front of the group," said Jorgensen. "Racing at cyclocross nationals can be a little bit more intimidating than racing at mountain bike nationals."
Hall closed by stating that this event will prove a lot for Lees-McRae and ultimately influence decision-making for nationals.
"This race at Warren Wilson will help us decide the call-up order for our team at Nationals, according to who can best take advantage of their starting spot," said Hall.
Weekend Lineup - Lees-McRae will compete with nine A riders, one B rider and two C riders this weekend.
Up Next - Collegiate Cyclocross Nationals will take place Dec. 13-15 in Louisville, Ky.
