BANNER ELK, NC--The Lees-McRae College Bobcats defeated the St. Andrews Presbyterian College Knights 68-64 Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas men's basketball action at Williams Gymnasium. The Bobcats improve to 4-15 (3-10 Conference Carolinas) while the Knights fall to 5-15, (4-9).
After a sluggish start that saw the Bobcats down nine 17-6 halfway through the first, the home side clawed their way back into the game and took the lead 20-19 with 6:52 to play. The Bobcats would not let up, outscoring the Knights by six down the stretch to take a seven point cushion into halftime, 40-33.
The Bobcats, who start four of their ten freshman each game, managed to control the play for much of the half, the growing confidence and maturity of the young squad shining through. "We had a great team effort today," stated Head Coach Scott Polsgrove. "We were able to get defensive stops late in the game that we didn't get Thursday, and once again it was the difference. Fortunately we were able to come out on the right end this time. It was a great game by both teams, but now it's over with and we just have to keep working hard and trying to get better each and every day."
The Bobcats used a balanced attack as all eleven players who stepped on the court hit the score sheet for at least two points.
