BOONE, N.C. --- Donald Sims (Gaffney, S.C.) netted 25 points and eight assists to lead the Appalachian State Mountaineers to a 103-69 victory over Lees-McRae College in a season opening exhibition. Tevin Friday (Gastonia, N.C.) and Adam McFerran (Stow, Ohio) each tallied 14 points on the evening to pace the Bobcats.
The Bobcats opened play taking an early 4-2 lead before the Mountaineers responded, piecing together a 12-4 run to claim a 14-8 advantage. Appalachian State continued to dictate pace for much of the first half, extending the lead to as much as 14 points during the opening stanza. The Bobcats answered, slowly creeping back into the contest and pulling within five points with just over 1:30 remaining in the half.
In the second half, the Mountaineers proved to be too much for the Bobcats to handle, as they utilized superior defense to shut down the Lees-McRae offense. Daniel Sepokas (Illawong, Austrailia) added 11 points for the Bobcats on the evening.
The Mountaineers dominated the Bobcats on the boards, out-rebounding LMC by a 39-24 margin on the night. Omar Carter (Charlotte, N.C.) added 17 points and nine assists for Appalachian on the evening.
Lees-McRae will open the regular season on Nov. 15 when the Bobcats travel to Mars Hill, N.C. to take on Mars Hill College at 7 p.m.
