TIGERVILLE, S.C. --- Adam McFerran (Stow, Ohio) poured in a game-high 32 points to lead the Lees-McRae College men's basketball team to a 89-85 win over North Greenville University on Thursday night.
Lees-McRae (1-1) put its offense on display, posting a field goal percentage of 62.8 percent, including a 77.3 percent clip in the first half, while recording its second straight game with 85 or more points. North Greenville (1-2) shot 51.5 percent from the floor, including a 57.1 percent clip in the second half, while the Bobcats knocked down 14-of-21 attempts from behind the arc.
McFerran knocked down 11-of-14 attempts from the floor, including a 4-for-5 clip from behind the arc, to post a game- and season-high 32 points; the senior forward posted 17 of his 32 markers in the first half. Sam Youse (Winston-Salem, N.C.), Daniel Sepokas (Illawong, Australia) and Reshon Benjamin (Valdosta, Ga.) each scored in double figures for the Bobcats, tallying 16, 14, and 11 points, respectively. Tevin Friday (Gastonia, N.C.) pulled down a team-high six rebounds for the Bobcats.
Paul Harrison (Alpharetta, Ga.) led the Crusaders with a double-double, posting 29 points and a game-high 11 rebounds on 13-of-20 shooting. Luke Lattimer (South Bend, Ind.) and Jonathan Bozymowski (Piedmont, S.C.) chipped in 20 and 17 points, respectively, while Tyrell Platt (Loxahatchee, Fla.) posted a game-high seven assists.
Neither team could gain a significant advantage in the early minutes of the first half until, with the score at 19-18 in favor of North Greenville, the Bobcats launched a 28-11 run over the next nine minutes to take a 42-30 lead on a triple by Benjamin with 3:20 to go in the period. The Crusaders would cut the margin to 42-34 with a quick 4-0 spurt before LMC regained control, closing out the half with a 9-2 run to take a 51-36 lead into the intermission.
The Bobcats carried the momentum into the early moments of the second half, stretching the lead to a game-high 19 points at 57-38 on back-to-back three-pointers by Benjamin and Sepokas. North Greenville would respond, launching an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to cut the lead to 57-49 on a layup by Kyler Booher (Covington, Ohio) with 16:26 to play.
Lees-McRae answered with a run of its own, pushing the lead to 65-51 with an 8-2 spurt, which was capped by a triple from Youse with 13:48 to play. North Greenville would storm back, going on a 16-2 run over the next four minutes to tie the score at 67-67 on a Pryor layup with 9:28 remaining.
The Bobcats would not be denied, reclaiming the lead with an 8-4 spurt over the next three minutes, taking a 75-71 lead on a McFerran layup with 6:02 to play. North Greenville would trim the lead to one point on several occasions down the stretch, but LMC was always there to answer, closing out the win with seven straight free throws over the course of an entertaining final 30 seconds.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Saturday when the Bobcats host Johnson & Wales University at 7 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium.
