BANNER ELK, N.C. --- When Lees-McRae College
hosts Erskine College on Thursday, February 10, 2011, coaches Scott
Polsgrove (South Bend, Ind.) and Sebastian Wild (Rostock, Germany)
will coach in their bare feet to raise awareness for Samaritan's
Feet, a not-for-profit organization that is aimed at serving the
impoverished by providing them with shoes.
The Barefoot Coaching movement was started in 2007, when IUPUI
head coach Ron Hunter made the decision to coach shoeless to raise
awareness about the plight of children in third-world countries who
suffer from foot-borne disease due to their lack of shoes. Coaches
Polsgrove and Wild will join Hunter and thousands of other coaches
as they seek to raise awareness.
During the contest, fans will be given the opportunity to join
in the fight with the coaches and Samaritan's Feet by texting SHOES
to a number that will be provided. The text that is sent will
provide a one-time, $10 charge to the sender's cell phone bill.
That $10 allows Samaritan's Feet to buy and ship a pair of shoes
anywhere around the world.
There will also be a number of announcements during the evening
aimed at providing information about Samaritan's Feet and their
At halftime of the men's contest, Lees-McRae College will honor
the 2010 Cyclocross national championship team as a part of the
evening's festivities. The women's contest is slated to start at
5:30 pm in Williams Gymnasium with the men's contest to follow.
