Saints rally to overcome Bobcats, 68-54

BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Danny Friend (Morrow, Ga.) led a foursome of double-digit efforts to pace the Limestone College Saints to a 68-54 victory over the Lees-McRae College Bobcats on Tuesday evening in Conference Carolinas men's basketball action. Friend tallied 16 to lead all scorers on the night, while Jarrell Douglass (Leesburg, Fla.) added 15 for the Saints (17-5, 11-3 CC). Also, tallying double figures were Stewart Clark (13, Atlanta, Ga.) and Joe Raga (12, Lithia, Fla.).

Daniel Sepokas (Illawong, Australia) dropped 12 points to lead the Bobcats (6-16, 2-12 CC), while Dairl Scott, Jr. (Pfafftown, N.C.) paced the Bobcats on the boards, ripping down nine on the evening.

The contest started slow, with the Saints getting on the board first at the 17:39 mark in the opening half, as Clark hit one of two from the charity stripe to give Limestone a 1-0 lead. Sepokas and Gerry Hairston (Winston-Salem, N.C.) opened the Bobcat scoring, tallying Lees-McRae's first 11 points of the contest to give LMC an 11-9 advantage with 15:00 remaining in the opening half.

The Bobcats continued to push the tempo, extending their lead over the next ten minutes, when Tevin Friday (Gastonia, N.C.) netted a jumper to make it a 32-25 advantage. Friday extended the lead to 12 points, with a free-throw at the 2:31 mark to make it 38-26. The Saints then closed the first half with a 7-0 run to cut the Bobcat advantage to 38-33 at the intermission.

In the second half, the teams traded baskets for the majority of the half as the Saints crept back into the contest. The Saints rallied to knot the score at 42-42 at the 16:47 mark in the second half, taking the lead seconds later when Nick Debnam (Raleigh, N.C.) laid one in to make it a 44-42 Saint advantage.

The two battled for the next nine minutes, when Scott intercepted a Limestone pass and slammed it home to knot the contest at 54-54 with 6:23 remaining. The Saints closed the contest with a 14-0 run over the final six plus minutes to earn the 68-54 victory.

The Bobcats return to the floor on Saturday, traveling to Mount Olive, N.C. to take on the Mount Olive College Trojans in conference play. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
