DUE WEST, S.C. --- The Erskine College men's basketball team placed three players in double figures and held off a late charge by Lees-McRae College en route to a 73-63 victory in Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday evening.
Erskine (16-8, 10-8 CC) posted a field goal percentage of 54.3 percent in the contest, including a 57.1 percent clip in the first half, while holding Lees-McRae (2-21, 2-15 CC) to a mark of 39.3 percent from the floor on the night. The Flying Fleet won the battle on the glass by a 34-32 margin, as Lees-McRae held a 15-9 advantage on the offensive boards, and outscored Erskine's bench, 50-10.
Daniel Sepokas (Illawong, Australia) paced the Bobcats with 12 points and a game-high seven assists, as Jeremiah Henry (Semmes, Ala.) nearly added a double-double with 11 markers and a contest-best nine rebounds. Corey Young (Bluff City, Tenn.) and DJ Brown (Anderson, S.C.) chipped in nine and eight points, respectively, as Young dished out four assists.
Corey Sorrell and DeShaun Hall each posted a game-high 18 points to lead the way for Erskine, as Roderick Perkins added 15 markers. Sorrell chipped in eight rebounds, while Mike Gabbard dished out six helpers. Chris Gore pulled down a game-high nine boards for the Fleet.
Erskine would open the first half with a 6-2 spurt before the Bobcats responded, snatching an 8-6 advantage following back-to-back triples by Young and Brown at the 16:06 mark. The Fleet answered with a 30-7 surge, claiming a 36-15 lead on a three-pointer by Jake Haslam with 3:02 left in the period before taking a 40-21 advantage into the intermission.
Lees-McRae countered in the early moments of the second half, cutting the margin to 42-29 on a Sepokas triple at the 17:23 mark to cap an 8-2 spurt. Erskine would answer with a 22-12 run, pushing the lead to 64-41 following a pair of Sorrell freebies with 8:49 to play.
The Bobcats quickly responded with a 14-8 spurt, closing the gap to 72-55 on a Young triple before finishing strong with an 8-1 spurt over the final two minutes, capping the scoring with a late trey by Chad Eppley (Boone, N.C.).
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Saturday when the Bobcats host Belmont Abbey College in conference play at 5 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium.
