Seniors Thrive; Bobcats Suffer Tough Loss to Newberry, 96-91

NEWBERRY, S.C. --- Seniors Austin Anderson and Kendall Isler combined for 48 points, but the Lees-McRae men's basketball team fell short to Newberry, 96-91, Saturday evening in Newberry, S.C.

The Wolves (1-1) shot 50% from the floor while Ronell Crockett paced the team with 21 points. The Bobcats (1-5) knocked down a staggering 15 three-pointers while Anderson (Anderson, S.C.) exploded for a season-high 28 points.

The senior came out hot and splashed a pair of threes in the first four minutes of play.

Junior Darius Malbon (Hickory, N.C.) rattled off five consecutive points while Newberry led 18-14.

Isler (Winder, Ga.) nailed a three before a Jonathan Honore (Baton Rouge, La.) bucket put LMC up, 29-26.

Both teams combined for four made three-pointers in a 70-second span late in the first half.

Anderson scored five more points in 46 seconds while Chad Hicks (Winston-Salem, N.C.) dished out a pair of assists.

LMC took a 46-40 lead into the break.

Coach Steve Hardin's squad shot 50% from the floor and 56.3% from beyond the arc in the first.

The Wolves went on a 13-0 run, sparked by a triple from Gerald Evans, giving Newberry a 57-51 advantage.

Josh Gaither (Statesville, N.C.) and Cameron Redd (Garner, N.C.) scored five points to cut the deficit to one, 70-69.

The Wolves kept LMC at arm's length until the last two minutes when a trio of Bobcat seniors combined for six points to tie it at 91 with 52 seconds remaining.

Newberry hit three free throws in the waning moments to give the home team the victory.

Isler finished with 20 points and seven boards. Anderson led the team with six assists.

The Bobcats finished the day shooting 49.3%.

LMC welcomes Mount Olive Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7:30 p.m. for a highly-anticipated Conference Carolinas battle.
