FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – Despite leading for most of the second half, the Lees-McRae College men's basketball team suffered a last-second loss in its conference opener to Emmanuel College, 74-73. The Bobcats move to 1-6 with the defeat.
Neither team seemed to have an advantage in the opening 10 minutes of the first half as no lead was larger than five points. That would change, however, when Emmanuel went on a 14-3 run to open a 13-point lead on the Bobcats. LMC would not go away though as it clawed back to get the deficit to seven heading into halftime, 35-28.
Lees-McRae began the second half on fire going on an 11-1 run to start the frame. After the run by the Bobcats, both teams held the lead multiple teams. LMC and EC continued to trade leads until the Bobcats went on a 6-0 run to take the lead. Lees-McRae would hold the advantage until the closing seconds when Emmerson McClung sunk one of two free throws to put the Lions on top with 74-73. LMC heaved a half-court shot to try to win the game, but it came up short.
Donte Falls posted 17 points to go along with eight rebounds to lead LMC on the scoreboard. Jonathan Honore posted a season-high 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, while Keith Heard II recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Additionally, Heard went a perfect 5-for-5 on field goal attempts.
The Bobcats will be back in action Thursday as they head to Johnson City, Tenn. to take on East Tennessee State in an exhibition contest. LMC and ETSU are scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.
