ANDERSON, S.C. – Despite receiving career-best performances from freshmen Andrew Gardner and Kerry Richardson, the Lees-McRae College men's basketball team dropped a 93-79 decision on the road at Anderson (S.C.) University Sunday afternoon. Lees-McRae's record moves to 5-8 on the season with the loss.
Anderson and Lees-McRae both got off to a slow start offensively in the opening 20 minutes. LMC shot just 1-for-12 from beyond the arc. Despite the dry spell from three-point range, the Bobcats trailed by just six with four minutes to go. The Trojans, however, went on a 13-3 to close out the first half on their way to leading LMC, 42-26, at the break.
The second half saw Lees-McRae cut Anderson's lead to single digits on a few different occasions. However, the 16-point hole proved too large to dig out of for the Bobcats as the Trojans held on for the 93-79 victory.
As mentioned earlier, the Bobcats were led Sunday by Gardner and Richardson. Gardner posted a double-double scoring a team-high 22 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Richardson, meanwhile, also had a career-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting and six rebounds. Jerick Haynes rounded out the double-figure scorers for Lees-McRae Sunday with 14 points.
Lees-McRae will be back in action Wednesday night when it visits league rival Barton. Tip-off between the Bobcats and Bulldogs is set for 7:30 p.m.
