Sophomore goalie Adam Canoy (Durham, NC) made a season high 26 saves as the Lees-McRae College Bobcats men's lacrosse team hosted Deep South Conference foe Wingate University Bulldogs Wednesday afternoon at Tate Field, however, it was not enough as Wingate returned home with a 17-5 victory.
The Bulldogs jumped out to 10-0 lead before the Bobcats could get on the board. Wingate took an 11-1 lead into the half. At the half, the Bobcats seemed to regroup, winning the third quarter by a score of 2-1. In the fourth, the Bobcats continued to battle, scoring twice more but unfortunately the depth and experience of the Wingate squad would prevail, as they would put up five, two of which were deflections off of Bobcats defenders.
Kyle Costello led the Bulldogs attack with six goals and an assist while Bryan Safarik and Mark Hodsdon each added a pair of goals. Dustin Hitt, Stephen Tarkington, John Martin, Dan Cook, Ryan Otterblad and Greg Williams all added single goals while Hitt and Martin also contributed assists for multi-point games.
Freshman Jason Schafhauser (Winston-Salem, NC) led the Bobcats offensively with three points on two goals and an assist. Classmates Kirk Rogers (Casselberry, FL), Neil Sleight (Williamsburg, VA) and Chevy Peake (Greensboro, NC) all added singles for the Bobcats while junior Tyler Stieber (Charlotte, NC) chipped in with three assists.
Wingate improves to 8-3 (6-1 DSC) with the win, while the Bobcats record drops to 0-10 (0-7 DSC).
The Bobcats will return to action Saturday April 8th as they host Deep South opponent Queen's University of Charlotte. Senior Captains Brad Dunn (Herndon, VA) and Jason Walker (Highland, MD) will be honored before the game, set for 4:00pm at Tate Field.
