Falcons Fly Over Bobcats in CVAC Opener

The Lees-McRae College Bobcats opened their Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference schedule at Pfeiffer University Wednesday afternoon, falling to the rival Falcons 12-7. The Bobcats fall to 0-2, (0-1 CVAC), on the season while the Falcons improve to 1-2, (1-1 CVAC).

The first quarter saw the home side score the first three goals of the contest for the 3-0 lead. The Bobcats tallied the only goal of the second quarter, an extra man goal from Jason Schafhauser, his second consecutive game with an extra man goal. The score remained 3-1 for the Falcons as the teams went into halftime. In the third, the Falcons scored six unanswered goals before the Bobcats came back to life to bury two in the last two minutes of the quarter. With the score 9-3 in favor of the home side, the Bobcats stuck first in the fourth with just over ten minutes remaining. Mental lapses allowed the Falcons to score three quick goals to put the game out of reach, leading 12-4. However, the Bobcats would continue to fight, clawing their way back with three goals of their own in less than a minute, but the damage had been done and the Falcons would escape with the 12-7 victory.

Schafhauser and Jason Grau led the Bobcats attack with a pair of goals each. Neil Sleight and Kirk Rogers chipped in singles while Caner Newton buried his first collegiate goal to round out the scoring. Grau's first goal was also the first of his college career.

The Bobcats resume CVAC action next Tuesday when they travel to Charlotte, NC to take on Queen's at 7:00pm.
