BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Coker College men's lacrosse team outscored Lees-McRae College by a 9-2 margin through the first three quarters on Saturday afternoon en route to a 10-4 win in Conference Carolinas play on Tate Field.
Coker (2-4, 1-1 CC) outshot Lees-McRae (1-6, 0-2 CC) by a 32-26 margin, including a 16-7 edge in the first half, while holding a 35-32 advantage in ground balls and converting 24-of-27 clear attempts. The Bobcats won 12-of-18 face-offs while converting 19-of-23 clears.
Josh Shingleton (Temecula, Calif.) paced the Bobcats with two goals, as Brett Yusiewicz (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Benjamin Shifflett (Clemmons, N.C.) each added a strike of their own. Derin Vacca (Wake Forest, N.C.), Nick Netting (Arlington, Va.) and Ryan Sparks (Hilton Head, S.C.) each tallied an assist, as Jeff White (Middle Township, N.J.) posted a game-high eight ground balls. Vacca won 11-of-14 face-offs, as Ryan Harrison (Lake Mary, Fla.) made 13 saves between the pipes for Lees-McRae.
Keith LaClair, Steve Marciano, Timothy Smith, and Adam Zinsmeister each tallied two goals to lead the way for Coker, as Marciano dished out a game-high three assists. Ryan Vento added two helpers, as Zinsmeister chipped in five ground balls. Tim Ryan recorded 14 saves between the pipes for Coker.
Coker opened an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter, recording the game's first goal on a LaClair strike with 5:15 to play in the period. Shifflett got the Bobcats on the board at the 10:08 mark of the second quarter, tallying his first collegiate goal off an assist from Sparks to halve the margin to 2-1.
Marciano would add two man-up goals to push the lead to 4-1, with the second of which coming at the 2:51 mark of the second to send the Cobras into the intermission with a three-goal advantage. After a Zinsmeister strike stretched the lead to 5-1 less than two minutes into the third, Yusiewicz answered with a strike off an assist from Vacca to trim the margin to 5-2 at the 12:44 mark.
Coker would respond with four straight goals, pushing the advantage to 9-2 on back-to-back strikes from Smith to end the third quarter. Shingleton opened the fourth quarter with a pair of goals, trimming the margin to 9-4 at the 11:33 mark before Mikey Mazzola capped the afternoon's scoring with a late goal for Coker.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Wednesday, March 7 when the Bobcats host Rollins College in a 1 p.m. matchup on Tate Field.
