The Lees-McRae College Bobcats soccer team, ranked #23 in the nation according to the latest NSCAA/Adidas Coaches Poll, dropped a 2-1 double overtime loss to Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference rival Queen's University Saturday evening.
Berin Boracic's (Orlando, FL) free kick in the game's 13th minute deflected off of Royals keeper Dan Williams to Lucas Duncan (West Palm Beach, FL) who made no mistake giving the nationally ranked Bobcats a 1-0 lead. Both teams created opportunities, the Royals sending ten shots towards the Bobcats keeper Dylan Lawrence (Winterville, NC); however Lawrence and the Bobcats defense would weather the storm and take the Bobcats into halftime with the one goal lead.
In the second half, Queens' Shane Burroughs and Matt Herbstritt worked a give and go past the Bobcats defense with Burroughs burying his shot past Lawrence to knot the score at one in the 57th minute. With neither team giving an inch, the team's raised their intensity looking for the winner in regulation. Bobcats Johnny Bownes (Worksop, England), Kyle McGimsey (Plant City, FL) and Nathan Wall (Des Moines, IA) were all cautioned, with McGimsey and Wall getting booked in the first overtime.
In the 114th minute Herbstritt solved Lawrence connecting a cross from Kevin O' Donnell into the back of the goal, sending the home bench into a frenzy. Lawrence (pictured) finished the evening with five saves; his counterpart Williams also registered five saves in the Royals goal.
The loss drops the Bobcats record to 4-2-1, (1-1 CVAC).
The Bobcats will look to get back to their winning ways Monday evening when they travel to King College for a non-conference match up. Kick off is set for 5:00p.m.
