Gaffney, SC--Lees-McRae forward Lee Squires (Sheffield, England) scored with four seconds remaining in regulation to lift the 18th ranked Bobcats past Limestone College and earn a 1-0 road win in Conference Carolinas action Wednesday afternoon. The win improves Lees-McRae to 6-1-1 (2-1 Conference Carolinas), while the Saints fall to 4-2-1 (1-2-1).
After a scoreless first half, Squires (pictured top left) lofted the ball over Saints goalkeeper Ryan Robinson, but was bailed out by teammate Dominic Casciato who slid in for the save. Just when it seemed the Saints were heading for their third overtime match this season, Squires buried his sixth of the season with just four seconds remaining.
"The discipline that was shown as well as the character the team played with today was fantastic," commented Head Coach Chris Whalley. "We passed the ball well; we defended the ball well and got our reward by never giving up and playing hard until the final whistle."
"Hopefully we can continue with this play and determination, and use it as a springboard for two important conference matchups at home," added Whalley referring to games against Barton and Queens, an NCAA Elite Eight team one year ago as well as defending Conference and Regional Champions.
The Bobcats outshot the Saints 6-4 in a tightly contested
affair, and held a 5-4 edge on corner kicks.
Sean Paradise (North Point, FL) picked up one save on the Saints only shot on goal, while his counterpart Robinson registered a pair.
The Bobcats will be back in action Saturday afternoon as part of Lees-McRae's Family Day when they host Barton College in Conference Carolinas action. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm.
