HARTSVILLE, SC--The number seven ranked Lees-McRae College Bobcats soccer team continued its winning ways Saturday afternoon, defeating the Coker College Cobras 3-2 in Conference Carolinas action. The Bobcats improve to 9-1-1 (5-1 Conference Carolinas) while the Cobras fall to 5-7 (2-4).
The Bobcats got on the board first in the 15th minute with an own goal due to a defensive miscue by Coker. Sophomore Dale Parker (Worksop, England) scored for the second consecutive game to give the nationally ranked Bobcats a two goal lead a minute later. The Bobcats would add one more before halftime with Lee Squires (Sheffield, England) scoring his fifth goal in four games in the 39th minute.
With a three goal deficit to overcome, the Cobras used their home crowd to their advantage. The Cobras broke through the tough defensive line of the Bobcats for a pair of quick goals in the 70th and 76th minutes, both from the foot of Matt Jarrett.
"Tonight was not our greatest performance," stated Head Coach Chris Whalley. "However, we managed to show some character and played with some heart, utilizing the depth of our squad to get a good result on the road in a hostile environment."
Squires' tenth goal of the season was also his fourth game winner this season; both lead the conference.
The Bobcats will resume play this week hosting a pair of home games before hitting the road for three straight. North Georgia visits Tate Field Wednesday evening for a 7:30pm contest while Conference Carolinas foe St. Andrews Presbyterian College comes to town for Saturday's 3:30pm Homecoming game.
