Bobcats Move to Fifth in the National Rankings and First in the Southeast Region Rankings

BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae Bobcats men's soccer team is ranked fifth in the nation and first in the southeast region according to the NCSAA/adidas National Rankings and Southeast Region Rankings that were released Tuesday afternoon.

The Bobcats are currently riding an eight-match win streak. When the streak started on September 5th, the Bobcats were ranked ninth in the southeast region and were unranked in the national poll. The Bobcats moved up six spots in the national ranking from the previous week and one spot in the region rankings.

"Being ranked first in the region really speaks to how hard the team has worked," said assistant coach Jay Benfield. "There are some tremendous teams in the Southeast Region, so it's an honor to be where we are. However, we can't be satisfied with what we have done, but we have to continue to improve and take it game-by-game. Especially, with our tough non-conference schedule remaining and as the Conference Carolinas season continues."

The Bobcats travel to Tusculum College, who are ranked 20th in the nation and third in the region, Wednesday night for their next match. The Bobcats also have games against Lander, fourth in region, Limestone, fifth in the region, Queens, seventh in the region, and Erskine, tenth in the region, remaining on their schedule.

"Being in the top five nationally at the end of September is wonderful, but we want to stay there for the rest of the year," Benfield said. "The rankings have given the team a boost, but we have to push it to the back of our minds because our schedule doesn't get any easier from now until the end of the season."
