2009 Men's Alumni Soccer Game Set for May 2nd

BANNER ELK, N.C. -- Head coach Chris Whalley has announced the date and time for the Annual Lees-McRae Men's Alumni Soccer Match. The game will be held Saturday, May 2nd at 2:00 p.m. on the campus of Lees-McRae at Tate Field.

"We had a tremendous turnout last spring and expect even greater numbers this May," Whalley said. "We really would like to see familiar faces converge in Banner Elk for a very competitive game between the current Bobcats and former ones."

Committed to playing this year for the alumni will be former Bobcat coach and standout Calvin Dixon, former player and coach Nick Young '02, Dave Bashara '89, '07 graduate Matt Debnam, Class of '08 members Diego Cordeiro and Andre Melkonyan, All-Conference performer Kyle McGimsey, four-year standout Jonathon Bownes, new alums Ian Dargavel, Nathan Bird, Lucas Duncan and Bobby Layburn, along with alum Les Broussard '93 who was on the first Lees-McRae team that competed as a four-year college. First year assistant coach Jay Benfield will also be playing with the alumni.

The alumni are poised to challenge a team that returns two All-Americans along with several All-Region and All-Conference honorees. The current Lees-McRae squad has captured back-to-back Conference Carolinas Regular Season and Tournament Championships as well as advanced to NCAA Elite Eight and Sweet Sixteen in both 2007 and 2008.

Prior to and throughout the game, a cookout will be headed up by Broussard's one and only Banner Elk Café. Family, friends and supporters of Bobcat alumni are encouraged to join and take part in the festivities May 2nd.

We anticipate seeing many old faces return to Lees-McRae May 2nd, so get the word out there regarding our annual alumni weekend. Following the game Bobcat Booster Tony Catoe and the men's soccer team will host an alumni social at Jackalope's View on Beech Mountain. This will be time for alumni to catch up with old friends and get to meet the new faces of the Lees-McRae men's soccer program.
