KANSAS CITY, Kan. --- The Lees-McRae College men's soccer team, fresh off an extra time win over Mount Olive on Saturday, is tied for 10th in the latest edition of the NSCAA/HendrickCars.com NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings, announced NSCAA officials Tuesday.
Lees-McRae has opened the season with four wins in its first six matches, including a trio of victories in Conference Carolinas play to enter the week atop the league standings with a 3-0 mark. The Bobcats posted a 2-1 record last week, defeating Belmont Abbey on the road ahead of a tough home loss to Lenoir-Rhyne, ranked seventh in the region, and a thrilling overtime win over Mount Olive on Saturday.
The Bobcats, last year's national runner-up, are led by senior forward and 2008 Daktronics All-American Lee Squires (Sheffield, U.K.), who enters the week tied for second in the conference in goals (five) and points (12). Freshman midfielder Justin Jones (Jamestown, N.C.) has also been a tremendous part of the Bobcats' success so far this season, entering the week leading the conference in assists (five), while ranking among the nation's leaders in helpers.
Montevallo (5-0-1) tops the region poll for the first time this season, followed by Clayton State (6-0-0), Flagler (4-1-0), Mars Hill (5-0-1), and North Georgia (3-0-3). Lincoln Memorial (4-0-0) is listed sixth, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne (4-1-0), Coker (4-1-2), and Wingate (3-2-0). Lees-McRae (4-2-0) is tied for 10th with Catawba (4-1-1) and the Bobcats' Wednesday opponent, Carson-Newman (3-1-1).
Lees-McRae returns to the pitch on Wednesday when the Bobcats host Carson-Newman at Tate Field. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m., with "Church Night" following shortly after the conclusion of the contest.
