DUE WEST, S.C. --- The Erskine College men's soccer team scored once in each half en route to a 2-0 shutout win over visiting Lees-McRae College on Tuesday night in Conference Carolinas action.
Lees-McRae (10-4-2, 6-1-1 CC) edged the Flying Fleet (9-7, 6-2 CC) by a 9-8 margin in shots, as Erskine moved into a tied for second in the conference standings heading into Saturday's regular season finales. Matt Suga (Greer, S.C.) and Cade Weatherly (Lexington, S.C.) each found the back of the net for the Flying Fleet, while Roberto de la Vina (Oviedo, Spain) made five saves to notch his third straight shutout.
Jonathan Rutter (Birmingham, U.K.) and Alex Connally (Warrington, U.K.) each tallied an assist for the Flying Fleet. Senior Lee Squires (Sheffield, U.K.) paced the Bobcats with three shots, including two attempts on frame, as James Galvani (High Wycombe, U.K.) and David Palmer (Gateshead, U.K.) each took a pair of chances at goal. Thomas Rusling (Sheffield, U.K.) made three saves for the Bobcats.
Sugga opened the scoring midway through the seventh minute, taking a cross from Rutter and slotting the finish into the side of the net to give Erskine an early 1-0 lead. The narrow advantage would hold until midway through the 73rd minute, when Weatherly accepted a ball from Connally and directed the finish inside the far post to push the margin to 2-0.
Lees-McRae returns to the pitch on Saturday when the Bobcats host Coker College to wrap up their conference and regular season schedule. The match is slated to kick off at 6 p.m. following the conclusion of LMC's Senior Day festivities.
