BANNER ELK, N.C. --- David Palmer (Gateshead, U.K.) netted a pair of goals to pace the top-seeded Lees-McRae College men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over the eighth-seeded Queens University of Charlotte in opening round play of the Conference Carolinas Tournament Tuesday.
James Galvani (High Wycombe, U.K.) added a goal and an assist for the Bobcats (12-4-2), while Lee Squires (Sheffield, U.K.) and Luke Perry (Cheshire, U.K.) each tallied a helper of their own on the evening.
Galvani opened the scoring in the ninth minute, taking a Luke Duffy (Wakefield, U.K.) pass and maneuvering his way through traffic, crossing the box and placing a shot into the near-side corner to give LMC a 1-0 lead. Palmer added the first of his tallies early in the 16th minute, smashing a shot inside the near post off a Galvani touch pass following a Perry corner-kick to double the advantage to 2-0.
Palmer added his second score of the contest, and ninth of the season, late in the 36th minute when Squires found a lane on the far sideline, lacing a cross through traffic into the six for the Palmer finish in the back netting to equal the final margin of 3-0.
The Bobcats used a balanced attack to out shoot the Royals by a 19-10 margin. Thomas Rusling (Sheffield, U.K.) recorded two saves, and Tyler Gibson (Gastonia, N.C.) added three of his own to keep Queens off the scoreboard. Siman Walmann (Nevlunghavn, Norway) and John Rush (Jacksonville, Fla.) combined for five saves on the evening for the Royals.
The Bobcats return to the pitch on Friday when they host fifth-seeded Pfeiffer University in the semifinal round of the conference tournament. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Tate Field.
