BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae College men's soccer team will play a demanding schedule this fall, taking the pitch against three squads that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season, including the Southeast Region champion, announced head coach Lee Squires Wednesday.
The Bobcats enjoyed a far better season than their record would indicate in 2013, pushing eventual national champion Lynn University to extra time in a narrow 1-0 loss in the season-opener, and topping defending Conference Carolinas champion Coker College on James Galvani's (High Wycombe, England) 94th minute strike. Squires and the Bobcats are primed for a return to form this season, returning 14 lettermen from last year's squad, and welcoming a deep and talented recruiting class to campus.
Lees-McRae opens the season on Thursday, September 5, making the short trek to Hickory, N.C. to take on Lenoir-Rhyne University before traveling to Greenwood, S.C. that Saturday for a showdown with defending Peach Belt Conference champion Lander University. The Bobcats then return to Banner Elk for their home opener on Wednesday, September 11 against Mars Hill College.
Following a home tilt against Carson-Newman College on September 16, the Bobcats travel to Wingate, N.C. for perhaps their biggest matchup of the season, taking on defending Southeast Region champion Wingate University on Wednesday, September 18. The Bobcats then return home to open their conference schedule with a September 21st tilt against Belmont Abbey College.
After hitting the road again to take on North Georgia College & State University, Lees-McRae will resume its league slate with three conference matchups, squaring off against North Greenville University (September 28) at home, Pfeiffer University (October 3) on the road, and Barton College (October 5) on Homecoming weekend.
The Bobcats will take the pitch on Tate Field again on October 8, hosting Francis Marion University in a Southeast Region clash, before making the short trek to Bristol, Tenn. for an October 12 matchup with King University. Lees-McRae then enters the home stretch of the regular season, closing out the conference schedule with a home match against Erskine on October 16 before traveling to Limestone College on October 19 and Mount Olive College on October 26.
The home stretch also features a pair of tough non-conference battles, including an October 22 road match against perennial NAIA stalwart Milligan College in Milligan College, Tenn. The Bobcats will close out the regular season on October 30, hosting Lincoln Memorial University on Tate Field.
