BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Senior James Smith tallied five points, including two goals, while the Lees-McRae men's soccer dismantled No. 12 Lander, 3-0, at Tate Field Saturday afternoon in Banner Elk, N.C.
The Bobcats (3-1) cranked out 15 shots in the final 45 minutes while freshman Tyler Pavlet (Goodyear, Ariz.) earned his third shutout of the year. The Bearcats (2-1) were whistled for 18 fouls while Jose Cubillan registered a team-high four shots.
Freshman Thomas Deeley (Timaru, New Zealand) notched his first career goal 91 seconds into the second half when Smith (Eastbourne, New England) fed him the ball from 10 yards out, besting the LU goalie Barrett Nielsen over the top.
Senior and reigning Conference Carolinas Player of the Week James Galvani (High Wycombe, England) recorded an assist when he placed ball into the middle of the box for Smith, who blasted a shot to the left side.
Smith converted on a penalty kick at the 77:44 mark to extend the lead to 3-0.
"It was important for us to bounce back after the disappointment of Wednesday night, and we did that," praised coach Lee Squires.
Smith and Galvani combined for 11 shots while Jordan Wright (West Lothian, Scotland) blasted four shots off the bench, including two on frame.
"Tactically we were great and implemented a game plan almost to perfection. Lander is a good team and if we have any aspirations about the post season, we have to beat these kinds of teams," said Squires.
LU's Nielsen recorded eight saves.
"It's important now we keep our feet on the ground, focus on Mars Hill next Wednesday, and work hard towards a similar performance to keep the momentum going," said Squires.
LMC concludes a three-match homestand when it welcomes MHU to Tate Field at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Banner Elk, N.C.
