BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Freshmen duo Nathan Watt and Thomas Deeley notched a goal and an assist each while the Lees-McRae men's soccer team outmuscled Mars Hill, 3-1, at Tate Field Wednesday evening in Banner Elk, N.C.
The Bobcats (4-1) tallied three goals for the second consecutive match while James Galvani (High Wycombe, England) recorded his team-high fourth goal of the season. The Lions (0-4) remain winless despite grabbing a lead in the fourth minute.
MHU drew first blood quickly when Amine Mardjett fed Alex Mullen on a cross. Mullen promptly connected on a one-timer to best goalie Tyler Pavlet (Goodyear, Ariz.).
The Bobcat offense needed only 61 seconds to notch the equalizer when Galvani blasted a shot past the Lions' Chris Mitchell after Deeley (Timaru, New Zealand) and James Smith (Eastbourne, England) delivered perfect passes.
Coach Lee Squires' squad went up for good in the 11th minute when Watt (Newcastle, England) flicked a header towards the net to find Deeley lying in wait, who scored his second goal in as many matches.
The Bobcats delivered the knockout blow when Watt corralled a pass from Smith while streaking down the right side and blasted a shot past Mitchell.
Pavlet made a stellar save in the waning seconds of the opening half when Mullen threatened to score again.
Mullen led both teams with seven shots while Mitchell notched five saves.
Sophomore Jordan Wright (West Lothian, Scotland) tallied four shots after coming off the bench. Pavlet stonewalled five shots while earning his fourth win on the year.
