Men's Soccer Knocks Out Belmont Abbey in Slugfest, 4-2

BELMONT, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae men's soccer team used a 10-minute spurt to score a season-high four goals while downing Belmont Abbey, 4-2, in Conference Carolinas play Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field in Belmont, N.C.

The Bobcats (8-4-1, 3-2-1 CC) dominated while holding a 17-6 shot advantage and saw four different players score a goal. The Crusaders (3-7-3, 2-5-1) lost for the fourth time in six matches despite leading 2-0 after the first 20 minutes.

Sophomore Marvyn Rieger (Frankfurt, Germany) placed a header on goal, but BAC's Luke Whelan was able to make the save.

The Crusaders' Mohamed Balde put the home squad on the board with a goal in the third minute when he was able to find the back of the net to the right side following a Jordan Gardner corner kick.

BAC's Clay Dimick corralled a Nick Fuller pass and notched a goal at the 19:47 mark to extend the lead to two, 2-0.

Reigning Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year Jordan Wright (West Lothian, Scotland) cut the deficit to one following a James Smith (Eastbourne, England) corner kick at the 28:26 mark.

Freshman Thomas Deeley (Timaru, New Zealand) tied it 6:27 later when he blasted a shot past Whelan after an LMC missed PK.

Deeley continued to torture the Crusader defense when he earned an assist on a James Galvani (High Wycombe, England) goal less than three minutes later.

Coach Lee Squires' squad capped off the scoring barrage with a successful PK from Smith at the 38:09 mark.

Following the six-goal outburst, neither team tallied a goal in the final 45.

Galvani outshot BAC, 7-6, while Nicholas Stover (Titusville, Fla.) earned the win.

LMC travels to North Greenville for CC bout Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. in Tigerville, S.C.
