Bobcats Valiant Effort Falls Short at Barton in Overtime, 3-2

WILSON, N.C. --- Senior James Smith recorded his eighth goal of the season, but the Lees-McRae men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking overtime 3-2 decision to Conference Carolinas foe Barton at Barton Soccer Field Saturday evening in Wilson, N.C.

The Bulldogs (11-4, 6-2 CC) enjoyed a two-goal performance from Erik Pajunk, who tallied both of his goals in a 4:28 span. The Bobcats (9-5-1, 4-3-1) notched two second half goals despite playing a man down following a first half red card.

Smith (Eastbourne, England) paced both teams with six shots while senior James Galvani (High Wycombe, England) registered five.

BC drew first blood with an unassisted goal from Pajunk, who took a solo run and found the back of the net on the left corner.

Pajunk didn't take much longer to make it 2-0 after connecting on a 30-yard free kick to the top shelf at the 14:32 mark.

LMC freshman Nathan Watt (Newcastle, England) cut the deficit in half when he had a shot hit the post and ricocheted into the left corner to make it 2-1 at the 68:34 mark.

Smith continued his superb senior campaign when he produced the equalizer after Galvani sent in a cross into the left side with eight minutes remaining in regulation.

The Bulldogs had two shots fly wide in the final two minutes, forcing overtime.

BC notched the golden goal less than three minutes into the first overtime when Danny Peru scored on a redirected kick from Kevin Strassburger.

Despite playing shorthanded, LMC outshot the Bulldogs 13-5 in the second half.

The Bobcats welcome King (Tenn.) for a CC tilt Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. on Tate Field.
