BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Lees-McRae senior Scott Alford made the most of Senior Day by notching a goal and earning an assist while the men's soccer team blanked Emmanuel (Ga.), 2-0, in a Conference Carolinas battle on a blustery Friday afternoon at Tate Field in Banner Elk, N.C.
The Bobcats (11-5-1, 6-3-1 CC) clinched the No. 4 seed for the Conference Carolinas Men's Soccer Championship and will host a quarterfinal matchup on Monday. The Lions (5-9-2, 2-8) mustered only six shots while goalie Sebastian Jones made eight saves.
Alford (Hillsborough, N.C.) was in the right place at the right time and cracked the scoreboard with a rebound goal after a James Smith (Eastbourne, England) shot was saved, but Jones was unable to cleanly recover the ball at the 11:32 mark.
Junior Jacob Copeland (Raleigh, N.C.) tallied his first goal of the year when he scored in the 42nd minute after beating Jones to the lower right in a 1-v-1 situation. Alford and Matthew Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) earned assists on the play with precision passing.
LMC controlled the pace of the match from the opening whistle while holding a 14-4 advantage on corner kicks and 23-6 advantage on shots.
Sophomore Nicholas Stover (Titusville, Fla.) earned the win with two saves in 70:07 of action and sophomore Gus Pederson (Sarasota, Fla.) made his first appearance of the season with 19:53 of shutout soccer.
The Bobcats will welcome an opponent that is to be determined Monday at 7 p.m. for the quarterfinal on Tate Field in Banner Elk, N.C.
