GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Mount Olive Friday night in the Conference Carolinas semifinals in Gaffney, S.C.
UMO struck first in the 29th minute as MacLayne Gairrett scored on a header off of a corner kick to give his team an early 1-0 advantage. The Bobcats would score the equalizer just four minutes into the second half when Pol Vassart found the back of the net for his 12th goal of the season. The Trojans, however, scored two unanswered goals to put the game out of reach for the Bobcats as they fell, 3-1.
Despite the two-goal defeat, the Bobcats did pepper the Trojan defense with attacks Friday. LMC outshot UMO 25-13 in the 90 minutes with 10 of those 25 attempts being on goal. Senior Tom Deeley led this charge with seven shots by himself. Vassart was not far behind with five more shots as well.
Tyler Pavlet took the loss in goal for the Bobcats after make two saves in five attempts. His record on the season dips to 11-5-3 on the campaign.
The loss brings the 2017 season to a close for the Bobcats. The team, which finished the season with an 11-5-3 record, will lose seven players to graduation in the offseason, including All-Conference players in Deeley, James Morgan and Nathan Watt. However, the Bobcats will return 30 players from this year's team with three All-Conference members in Vassart, Johannes Oeksnevad and Harvey McMorrow among them.
