BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College men's soccer team defeated visiting Newberry in non-conference action 8-2 on Wednesday (Oct. 3).
Game Summary - The Bobcats would open the scoring in the 12th minute when Agustin Ortiz and Matt Dunn worked together to find Pol Vassart in the box. Vassart headed home his ninth of the season to put the Bobcats up 1-0. The home team would double its lead 10 minutes later when Harvey McMorrow found Johannes Oeksnevad off a corner kick for Oeksnevad's third of the season. The Wolves would get on the board less than a minute later when Fabrizio Bucco scored his fourth of the season from Vojin Manjlovic. Vassart would re-gain the two-goal lead with his second of the match in the 30th minute when Philip Oldin found Ortiz who in turn found Vassart who scored to make it 3-1. The Bobcats would take a 4-1 lead to the half after Connor Hahn set up Agustin Ortiz for his fifth of the season in the 35th minute. Oeksnevad would get the second half scoring started with his second of the night from Vassart, after Vassart took advantage of a failed clear by Newberry's keeper. Vassart found Oeksnevad who scored to make 5-1. Hahn would score his second of the night just over two minutes later when a ball was cleared right to him and he blasted a shot to the top right corner. Ortiz would make it 7-1 with his second of the night from McMorrow and Vassart, before Newberry would score their final goal of the night when Bucco ran past everyone to catch a long ball from Eric Brody and beat LMC keeper Logan Greene for his second of the night. Bryce Horan would wrap up the scoring with his second of the season from Angel Abrego and Uriel Castro Zavaleta in the 71st minute to put the match at its final score.
Stats Rundown - LMC out-shot Newberry 26-8 in the contest, including 15-6 in shots on goal. Ortiz led the effort with a game-high six shots, while Horan and Oeksnevad each fired four shots. Vassart totaled three on the night, while Hahn tallied two. Seven other Bobcats recorded one shot each in the win. Greene (1-0-0) made four saves in the effort.
Up Next - The Bobcats are back at home on Homecoming Saturday (Oct. 6) when they take on Milligan in non-conference action. Kickoff is set for 4:15 p.m. at Tate Field.
