The Lees-McRae College Bobcats men's tennis team hosted Virginia Intermont College over the weekend, opening the 2007 season with a heartbreaking 5-4 defeat. The Bobcats led four matches to two before the visiting Cobras, ranked #13 in NAIA, stormed back to steal the win.
In doubles play, Alek Mojski and Ricardo Velazquez teamed up to beat the Cobra's Filipe Fonseca and Jonathan Berhane 8-6 to kick things off. VIC would come back to take the next two doubles matches, (Milan Kosicky/Jon Jonsson def. Shaun Sumner/Romulas Teague 8-5, Andrew Connely/Arsalan Mermut def. Blair Propert/Paul Muneau 8-1) before the singles matches would get started.
Matched up against Kosicky, Sumner would take game one 6-3 before the VIC player was forced to retire. Mojski, (pictured top left), handled Fonseca 6-3 and 6-4 to give the Bobcats the 3-2 lead. Velazquez would extend the home side's lead defeating Connely 6-3 before he too was forced to retire.
