Banner Elk, NC--An ambitious Lees-McRae men's tennis team opened up their season not only by playing two matches in one day, but also coming out the victor in both competitions. The Bobcats began the day hosting NAIA Div II school Milligan College defeating them 9-0, before traveling to Asheville to compete against UNC-Asheville, a NCAA Div I college, and beating them 4-3.
In the first match of the day freshman Nandor Solymosi (Debrecen, Hungary), playing #1 singles, set the pace for the Bobcats winning 6-1,6-2 over Jonathan Ryan (Wangaratta, Australia). At #2 it was Romulus Teague (Hickory, NC) defeating Bryan Upshaw (Kingsport, TN) 6-4, 6-4 in the closest match of the morning. The Bobcats overpowered the rest of the Buffaloes' lineup, allowing them only one game in the remaining singles matches.
In doubles action, the Bobcats once again dominated, winning both #1 and #2 by scores of 8-0, 8-0. The #3 doubles team, sporting two freshmen, also managed to win giving up only two games in their effort.
The team then headed over to UNC-Asheville to face a Div I opponent for their second match of the day where Head Coach Paul Goode made some strategic changes in the lineup to position the Bobcats for their another victory.
Newcomer, Nandor Solymosi, once again pulled out a win for the Bobcats defeating Div I opponent Mauricio Correa (Brasilia, Brazil) 6-2, 6-4. Returner Shaun Sumner (Burlington, NC), playing #2, dropped a close 7-6, 7-6 match to Joe May. Sophomore Alek Mojski (Berlin, Germany) and freshman Travis VanHoy (Union Grove, NC) defeated their foes in the #3 and #4 positions while Teague (#5) and Michael Ridenhour (Mooresville, NC) at #6 fell to their competition, leaving the Bobcats tied 3-3 with the Bulldogs.
Needing to take at least of two the three matches in doubles action to take home the upset victory, the #1 doubles of Sumner/Solymosi outlasted the Bulldogs for a 8-6 win. The duo of Mojski/Teague fell 8-3 while #3 competitors VanHoy/Ridenhour sealed the 4-3 win for the Bobcats by defeating their opposition 8-3.
Next up for the 2-0 men's tennis team is JC Smith in Charlotte, NC. First serve is set for 2:00pm.
