Charlotte, NC--The Lees-McRae Bobcats swept the singles matches and captured two of the three doubles in their 8-1 win over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls in Charlotte, NC Tuesday afternoon in non-conference tennis action. With the win over the NCAA Div II opponent, the Bobcats move to 3-0 on the season while Golden Bulls open their season 0-1.
At the #1 singles it was once again Bobcat freshman, Nandor Solymosi (Drebecen, Hungary) dominating his competition, junior Romar Douglas (St. George, Bermuda), 6-0,6-4. Returning players Shaun Sumner (Burlington. NC) and Alek Mojski (Berlin, Germany), playing #2 and #3 respectively, defeated their Golden Bulls opponents handily. Two freshmen stepping into the line-up at #4 (Travis VanHoy, Union Grove, NC) and #5 (Mike Ridenhour, Mooresville, NC) gave up only three games between them in securing the victories at those spots. Sophomore Blair Propert (Gold Coast, Australia) played well, winning his match 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles action, the Bobcats duo of Sumner/Solymosi outlasted the Golden Bulls combo of Douglas/Jason Stuckey 8-5. The Golden Bulls managed to pull out a win at #2 doubles, with Aaron Hutcherson/Jamil Jones defeating Mojski/Romulus Teague (Hickory, NC) 8-4. The Bobcats #3 doubles, freshmen VanHoy/Ridenhour, were able to continue their winning ways, coming out ahead 8-3 for the match and finalizing the 8-1 win for the squad.
Next up for the Bobcats is #18 ranked University of South Carolina-Aiken, another NCAA Div II opponent. The team travels there on Saturday, February 9. First serve is set for 1:00pm.
