Charlotte, NC--In their first Conference Carolinas match of the season the men's tennis team triumphed over host school Queens University of Charlotte 7-2, sweeping in singles action. The win puts the Bobcats at 5-3 for the spring season and 1-0 in conference play. The Royals 3-4 on the year now are 1-2 in Conference Carolinas.
With Nandor Solymosi (Drebecen, Hungary)gaining his fifth win of the season at the one slot, and Alek Mojski (Berlin, Germany) garnering his third (fifth overall) in the two spot, the Bobcats started out strong in singles action. Shaun Sumner (Burlington, NC) and freshman Travis VanHoy (Union Grove, NC) maintained the Bobcats effort for the singles sweep, taking their matches in the three and four positions respectively with VanHoy battling to a 7-6 win in the final set. After allowing his opponent to take four games in the first set, Blair Propert (Gold Coast, Australia) vanquished his foe 6-1 in the second. Romulus Teague (Hickory, NC) completed the sweep for the Bobcats when he came out on top at the six slot.
didn't fair as well in doubles action, with only Mojski/Teague (#3
doubles) converting their match to an 8-2 win over the Royals. The
duo of Sumner/Solymosi fell 8-6 in #1 doubles, while VanHoy/Michael
Ridenhour (Mooresville, NC) lost 8-5 to give the Royals their
only two points in the match.
The Bobcats resume play Monday when they travel to Gaffney, SC to face Limestone College in Conference Carolinas action. The Royals have a week break before they host Anderson College on March 8th.
