Gaffney, SC--Lees-McRae men's tennis team was narrowly defeated by Conference Carolinas foe, the #33 ranked Limestone College Saints, 5-4 Monday afternoon in Gaffney, SC. Strong play in singles gave the Saints a 4-2 advantage heading into doubles action, where the Bobcats captured two of the three matches, not quite enough to claim the match win. The Bobcats now stand at 6-4 (1-1 conference) while Limestone climbs to 4-3 (2-0).
Freshman Nandor Solymosi (Drebecen, Hungary) battled the Saints' #1 Thomas Ollivier (who had won three of his last four matches) in a contest that lasted three sets. Solymosi, winning the first set, 3-6, lost the next set 7-5, and was forced into a third set where the junior's experience paid off with a 6-1 win. Bobcat junior, Alex Mojski (Berlin, Germany) earned his second conference win of the season when he defeated Philipe Hogan in a three set match. He fell 3-6 on the first set, but clawed his way back in the matching taking sets three and four (6-4, 6-4).
At #3 sophomore Shaun Sumner (Burlington, NC) battled to a 7-5 loss in the second set after dropping the first set 6-2. Travis VanHoy (Union Grove, NC) and Romulus Teague (Hickory, NC) both fell to the Saints at the four and five slots, while sophomore Blair Propert (Gold Coast, Australia) grabbed another point for the Bobcats when he defeated Alexander Fager 6-3, 6-1 at #6 singles.
In doubles action, Sumner/Solymosi claimed their fifth #1 doubles victory of the year winning 8-5 and the duo of Mojski/Teague outlasted their oppponents in a 9-7 contest at #3 doubles, giving them their fourth consecutive win. Freshmen VanHoy/Michael Ridenhour (Mooresville, NC) dropped their match 8-2.
The Bobcats match scheduled for Tuesday, March 4 against Francis Marion has been postponed due to inclement weather. The Bobcats will resume play when they travel to Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC on Wednesday, March 5.
