SUMTER, S.C. -- Tyler Grove, a freshman from Hendersonville, N.C., won the B-Flight Singles Bracket in the Conference Carolinas Fall Tournament to lead the Bobcats men's tennis team over the weekend.
Grove, the third seed in the B-Flight Singles Bracket, upset Queens' Jonathan O'Rourke, second seed, in the semifinal round (7-5, 5-7, 6-2) and Limestone's Christian Warnholtz, number one seed, in the finals (6-4, 2-6, 7-5) for the victory.
In the A-Flight Singles, second seeded, Nandor Solymosi, fell to number one seed Thomas Ollivier of Limestone (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) in the finals.
Other notable Bobcat finishers: Travis VanHoy, lost in the semifinal round to Warnholtz (6-3, 6-7, 10-6) in the B-Flight Singles, Shaun Summer and Alek Mojski advanced to the quarterfinal round of the A-Flight Singles.
Last spring, Solymosi was 7-2 in Conference Carolinas at No. 1 singles with his losses coming at the hands of Conference Carolinas Men's Tennis Player of the Year Phillip Pakebusch (Anderson University) and fellow All-Conference First Team player Thomas Ollivier, a junior at Limestone College. Solymosi was last year's Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year and also First Team All-Conference.
Mojski played at the two last spring for the Bobcats, tallying an 8-1 record in league play and earning him his second All-Conference award, adding All-Conference Second Team honors to his All-Conference Honorable Mention earned in 2007.
Sumner received All-Conference Honorable Mention for his efforts on the court in the 2008 spring season. Spending most of his time at No. 3, Sumner accumulated a 6-2 conference record in singles.
