BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. --- The No. 18 Augusta State University men's tennis team earned a hard-fought 7-2 victory over No. 22 Lees-McRae College on Monday afternoon, sweeping doubles play in a neutral site match on the campus of Gardner-Webb University.
Augusta State's (11-5) Bernado Fernandes and Henrique Boturao opened the day with an 8-4 victory over Alexander Hayes (Mexico City, Mexico) and Skylar Warren (Asheville, N.C.) at No. 1 doubles, before Victor Cabellos and Victor Giumaraes defeated Travis VanHoy (Olin, N.C.) and Pedro De Sousa Nunes (Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil) by a score of 8-2 in the second pairing. Jenner Stevenson and Maxime Coulomb then edged Nandor Solymosi (Drebecen, Hungary) and Callum Loveridge (Ashbourne, England) 8-6 to give the Jaguars a 3-0 advantage.
Solymosi cut the deficit to 3-1 at No. 1 singles for Lees-McRae, battling to a 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 win over Fernandes. Boturau then rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 victory over VanHoy, before Cabellos defeated Hayes 6-3, 6-2 to give the Jaguars the deciding point. Giumaraes defeated Nunes 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 singles before Rafael Milhati swept Graham Battle (Boone, N.C.) 6-0, 6-0 in the fifth matchup. Loveridge ended the day on a high for the Bobcats, rallying for a 2-6, 6-2, 12-10 win over Sergi Forcadell at No. 6 singles.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Tuesday when the Bobcats travel to Wilson, N.C. to take on Barton College in a Conference Carolinas match at 2 p.m.
