Bobcats ground Fleet, 7-2Box score
BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The No. 22 Lees-McRae College men's tennis team won two of three matches in doubles play, and emerged victorious from the first five pairings in singles action en route to a 7-2 win over visiting Erskine College in Conference Carolinas play on Friday afternoon.
With the victory, Lees-McRae (6-6, 5-0 CC) takes sole possession of first place in the conference standings, as Erskine's (2-11, 1-6 CC) Christian Ranquelov and Fabio Ciarrocchi opened the match with a hard-fought 9-8 (7-4) victory against Alexander Hayes (Mexico City, Mexico) and Skylar Warren (Asheville, N.C.).
Travis VanHoy (Olin, N.C.) and Pedro De Sousa Nunes (Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil) answered with a 9-7 win over Jack West and James Hoatson to even the tally at 1-1. Nandor Solymosi (Drebecen, Hungary) and Callum Loveridge (Ashbourne, England) then gave the Bobcats the lead for good, defeating Angelo Ciarrocchi and Vincent Chauvette by a score of 8-5 to conclude doubles play.
Solymosi widened the margin to 3-1 at No. 1 singles, defeating Angleo Ciarrocchi, 6-1, 6-0, as VanHoy won his No. 2 flight match against Ranquelov by scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Hayes delivered the decisive point at No. 3 singles, defeating Fabio Ciarrocchi, 6-1, 6-3 before Nunes knocked off West, 6-4, 6-0 in the fourth matchup.
Graham Battle (Boone, N.C.) then battled to earn a 7-5, 6-2 victory in his No. 5 singles match against Chauvette. Hoatson rounded out the day with a hard-fought 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 victory against Loveridge to equal the final margin of 7-2.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Saturday, Apr. 2 when the Bobcats travel to Misenheimer, N.C. to take on Pfeiffer University in a clash of undefeated foes in conference action. Play is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
