MISENHEIMER, N.C. --- The No. 28 Lees-McRae College men's tennis team rallied past Pfeiffer University for a 5-4 victory in its Conference Carolinas regular season finale on Sunday, winning the last three singles matches of the day to complete the comeback.
Pfeiffer's (6-8, 2-4 CC) top-flight doubles duo of Phillip Lawson and Johan de Wit opened the day with an 8-1 victory over Travis VanHoy (Olin, N.C.) and Nandor Solymosi (Drebecen, Hungary), before Ben Hunter and Stephen Tyndel defeated Pedro De Sousa Nunes (Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil) and Graham Battle (Boone, N.C.) by a tally of 8-2. Callum Loveridge (Ashbourne, England) and Alexander Hayes (Mexico City, Mexico) started the Bobcat rally at No. 3 doubles, registering an 8-6 win over Sid Kaushik and Luis Villalta to cut the margin to 2-1.
Hayes pulled the Bobcats even at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Kaushik at No. 3 singles, before Lawson reclaimed the advantage for the Falcons with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-4 win against Solymosi in the top singles flight. De Wit pushed the Falcon lead to 4-2 with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win over VanHoy at No. 2 singles, before Nunes countered for the Bobcats with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Hunter in the fourth flight.
Battle continued the momentum with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Tyndel to even the match tally at 4-4, before Loveridge delivered the deciding result with a come-from-behind three-set win against Villalta, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Lees-McRae now awaits the official pairings for next weekend's Conference Carolinas Tournament after clinching the third seed with a league mark of 6-2. The Bobcats will travel to Sumter, S.C. for the first round of the conference tournament, hosted by Erskine College, on Friday at the Sumter Tennis Center.
