HIGH POINT, N.C. --- Lees-McRae College senior Travis VanHoy (Olin, N.C.) has been named the 2011 Conference Carolinas Men's Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year for the first time in his career, announced league officials Thursday.
VanHoy put together a tremendous senior season for the Bobcats, registering six crucial victories in NCAA Division II play, including a hard-fought three-set victory over Limestone's Mike Stephenson on April 3. The two-time all-conference selection closed out his career with four wins in his last six doubles matches, including an 8-6 win while paired with fellow senior Nandor Solymosi (Drebecen, Hungary) in the top flight matchup against Queens on April 6.
A native of Olin, N.C., VanHoy manned the No. 2 singles spot throughout the season, closing out his career with three wins in his last four matches. VanHoy was named to the all-Conference Carolinas Academic team earlier this spring, while also earning his second straight all-conference selection. A member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society, VanHoy earned a spot on Lees-McRae's dean's list this past fall while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.65.
Lees-McRae is expected to return eight letter-winners from this year's squad, including Pedro De Sousa Nunes (Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil), who was named to the all-Conference Carolinas Third Team this season. The Bobcats posted an 8-9 record this season, playing a demanding schedule that featured five matches against NCAA Division I opponents.
