BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae College men's tennis team celebrated senior day in impressive fashion on Saturday afternoon, sweeping doubles play and taking five of six singles matches en route to an 8-1 victory over Belmont Abbey College in Conference Carolinas play.
The Bobcats honored their senior class prior to the match, celebrating the careers of seniors Alexander Hayes (Mexico City, Mexico), Skylar Warren (Asheville, N.C.), Marcelo Tatai (Sao Paulo, Brazil), and Graham Battle (Boone, N.C.).
Lees-McRae's (4-11, 4-6 CC) tandem of Hayes and Warren kicked off the afternoon with an 8-6 victory over Belmont Abbey's (2-11, 1-7 CC) duo of Connor McCann and Alex Gradenwitz, before Tatai and Pedro De Sousa Nunes (Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil) defeated Patrick Noelke and Tim Tanko, 8-2. Battle and Hang Lak Choi (Newton, N.C.) then delivered an 8-6 win over Gabriel Trombini and Idris Moya to give the Bobcats a commanding 3-0 advantage.
McCann answered for the Abbey at No. 1 singles, defeating Nunes 6-3, 7-5, before Hayes registered his ninth singles victory of the season with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Gradenwitz. Warren then defeated Trombini, 6-1, 6-2 to clinch the victory for the Bobcats, as Battle posted a 6-0, 6-2 win against Noelke. Tatai defeated Tanko, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 5 spot, as Choi closed out the day with a hard-fought 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 victory over Moya in the sixth flight.
Lees-McRae now awaits the final pairings for next week's Conference Carolinas Tournament, to be hosted by Erskine College at the Sumter Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C. on April 20-22. The Bobcats currently hold the sixth spot in the conference standings, which would grant them the sixth seed in the tournament if the season ended today.
