BELMONT, N.C. --- Freshman Taduez Poplawski (Asheville, N.C.) posted a win in both singles and doubles play to pace the Lees-McRae College men's tennis team on Friday afternoon, as the Bobcats fell to Belmont Abbey College by a score of 6-2 in Conference Carolinas play.
Belmont Abbey's (2-6, 1-3 CC) tandem of Connor McMann and Tom Wigley kicked off doubles play with a hard-fought 9-8 victory over Lees-McRae's (1-3, 0-1 CC) duo of Joao Araujo (Curitiba, Puerto Rico) and Carlos Pinel (Vitoria, Espírito Santo, Brazil), before Poplawski and Hang Lak Choi (Newton, N.C.) evened the tally for the Bobcats with a 9-8 win against Michael Van Dusen and Rodrigo Alatorre.
Idris Moy and Tim Tanko regained the lead for the Abbey in the third flight, defeating Adam Chivers (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Jesse Artrip (Cleveland, Va.), 8-1. McMann pushed the lead to 3-1 in the top singles match-up, registering a hard-fought 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-0) victory over Araujo before Poplawski answered with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Van Dusen in the second flight.
Wigley responded with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Pinel at No. 3 singles, as Gabriel Trombini and Moya posted 6-0, 6-0 victories over Artrip and Chivers, respectively, to clinch the 6-2 team victory for Belmont Abbey.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Saturday when the Bobcats travel to Hartsville, S.C. to take on Coker College in league play at 11 a.m.
