MISENHEIMER, N.C. --- Hang Lak Choi (Newton, N.C.) and Taduez Poplawski (Asheville, N.C.) each recorded a hard-fought victory in singles play to pace the Lees-McRae College men's tennis team on Friday afternoon, as Pfeiffer University held on for a 7-2 victory in Conference Carolinas play.
Pfeiffer's (9-5, 4-3 CC) tandem of Loic Minery and Ben Hunter kicked off the afternoon with an 8-2 victory over Lees-McRae's (0-8, 0-4 CC) duo of Joao Araujo (Curitiba, Puerto Rico) and Carlos Pinel (Vitoria, Espírito Santo, Brazil) in the first doubles flight, as Orlando Castillo and Luis Villalta defeated Poplawski and Choi, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles.
Sebastian Wernecke and Ethan Lyon pushed the lead to 3-0 in the third flight, registering an 8-0 victory against Jesse Artrip (Cleveland, Va.) and Adam Chivers (Wilbraham, Mass.). Minery defeated Araujo, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles before Poplawski answered for the Bobcats in the second flight, putting together a hard-fought 7-6, 6-3 victory over Wernecke to cut the advantage to 4-1.
Villalta posted a 6-3, 6-4 win against Pinel in the third flight, before Choi turned in the performance of the day for the Bobcats, battling back for an epic 4-6, 7-5, 10-7 victory over Lyon at No. 4 singles. Brett Williams recorded a 6-0, 6-0 decision against Artrip in the fifth flight, as Stephen Miller capped the day with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Chivers at No. 6 singles.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Friday, March 29 when the Bobcats travel to Mount Olive, N.C. to take on Mount Olive College in league play at 2 p.m.
