King holds on for sweep of Bobcats
NEWLAND, N.C. --- The King College men's tennis team rallied for a pair of singles victories en route to a 9-0 win over Lees-McRae College in Conference Carolinas play on Tuesday afternoon at Avery County High School.
King's (8-5, 2-3 CC) tandem of Rodrigo Avila and Pablo Vidal kicked off the day with an 8-3 victory over Joao Araujo (Curitiba, Puerto Rico) and Carlos Pinel (Vitoria, Espírito Santo, Brazil), as Patrick Jones and Leo Brigato battled to an 8-5 win against Taduez Poplawski (Asheville, N.C.) and Hang Lak Choi (Newton, N.C.). William Boyce and Rafael Francisco gave the Tornado a 3-0 lead with an 8-2 decision against Jesse Artrip (Cleveland, Va.) and Adam Chivers (Wilbraham, Mass.).
Avila opened singles play with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Araujo, before Vidal rallied for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win over Poplawski in the second flight. Brigato held on for a three-set victory at No. 3 singles, edging Pinel, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3; Jones defeated Choi, 6-1, 7-6 in the fourth flight. Francisco won the fifth flight with a 6-0, 6-2 decision against Artrip, as Boyce capped the day with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Chivers.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Wednesday when the Bobcats travel to Tigerville, S.C. to take on North Greenville University in league play at 2 p.m.
